About this event

  • 8 hours

Chris Subbe and the Welsh Acute Physicians' Society (WAPS) are delighted to be hosting our next face-to-face only symposium - this time in fabulous North Wales after a six-year hiatus!

We will cover recent medical updates and reflect on the current clinical and non-clinical challenges we all face in healthcare. As always, we have a range of sessions and speakers and we especially welcome anyone in acute/general medicine to our event - delivered by our acute medicine multidisciplinary family in Wales and beyond!

Programme Highlights (full programme below)

  • Acute oncology session with Tim Cooksley from The Christie in Manchester and colleagues from North Wales (Pasquale Innominato, Jonathan Sutton and Jenna Allsup) - new treatments and the role of artifical intelligence in cancer detection
  • NICE: our popular collection of clinical guidance updates returns once again
  • The challenge of governance: local expert Ben Thomas and returning external speaker Mark Holland tackle risk and avoiding being sued.
  • We welcome RCP and HEIW legends Hilary Williams and Olwen Williams - focusing on how to enjoy medicine
  • The president of Society for Acute Medicine Nick Murch talking us through the reality of teaching and learning on the job and the president elect Vicky Price exploring sustainability
  • And finally Conor Martin from Bangor rounds up the day addressing the risk of patients not moving
  • No printed programmes on the day sorry, trying to save the trees :)
  • Who is it for?

  • Doctors of all grades and medical specialities
  • PA/ACP/AHP/Nurses/Pharmacy/Students
  • We would especially welcome anyone interested in acute medicine as a career
  • What do you get?

  • Lunch and refreshments throughout the day
  • Certificate of attendance - will be emailed along with the RCP CPD code in due course after the event
  • An opportunity to chat with the Acute Medicine family in Wales - we would love you to join us after the symposium for our post-event gathering!
  • 6 RCP CPD approval applied for
  • With a thankful return to more events face-to-face, we will not be offering a virtual option or recording talks on this occasion, apologies

OUR SPEAKERS (More bios to follow)

Olwen Williams

Olwen is a Welsh speaking Consultant physician working in the field of Sexual Health and HIV medicine who has recently retired from clinical medicine after 30 years. She is currently seconded to HEIW as Associate Director of Clinical Leadership. For the past 3 years she has held the role of RCP Vice President for Wales. She states that if Acute Medicine had been a specialty in 1988 when she was choosing her trajectory in life , she would have chosen to become an Acute Physician! Her commitment to developing and maintaining excellence within Medicine was acknowledged in the Queen's Birthday Honours 2005, when she was awarded an OBE for services to Medicine in Wales.

ABOUT US: THE WELSH ACUTE PHYSICIANS’ SOCIETY (WAPS)

Our society was formed in 2014 and is dedicated to furthering the specialty of Acute Medicine within Wales, and supporting our local trainees. It was established by a group of Welsh Acute Medics – both trainees and consultants, predominantly with the aim of raising the profile of the specialty and providing a network via which all Welsh trainees can come together to support each other and enhance their education and training opportunities.

Thus far, WAPS has been associated with the all Wales annual residential training week, national symposia and delivering the acute internal medicine curriculum to our trainees. We have a strong relationship with the Society of Acute Medicine (SAM), especially when hosted in Wales.

Our hope is that WAPS and the Acute Medicine family, including our nursing, physician associate and allied health colleagues, continue to flourish and develop together over the coming years. We are passionate about our chosen specialty and are keen to attract similarly motivated individuals; so if you wish to learn more about the society, our plans, or training in Acute Medicine in Wales, then please chat to any one of us (we will be wearing WAPS shirts!)
